So all my soon to be mommas or just had a baby mommas, any of you have allergies? Coconut is unfortunately in so many after baby products so I will share one of my favorite cookie recipes with some bonuses of being a mom. NOTE: you can make the cookies without the lactation components.
So some great lactation components are: Brewer’s Yeast, Oatmeal and Flaxseed Meal.
- Brewer’s yeast is a highly nutritious dietary supplement that contains protein, iron, and B vitamins, as well as chromium, selenium, and other trace minerals. It comes from a fungus called Saccharomyces cerevisiae. It is used for baking, brewing beer, and making wine, but many breastfeeding mothers use it to boost their milk supply, increase energy levels, and elevate mood.
- Oatmeal contain proteins, vitamins, and minerals. They are high in iron, zinc, manganese, and calcium. They are an excellent source of soluble fiber. Plus, they contain B vitamins to help increase energy, elevate mood and fight off exhaustion, anxiety, stress, and depression. Foods that contain plant estrogens are associated with the stimulation of the milk glands and a greater production of breast milk.
- Flaxseed meal is probably safe during breastfeeding as long as you don’t take more than a normal supplemental amount of 2 tablespoons or so. Too much can decrease breastmilk supply due to estrogen effect.
Cookie Recipe (makes roughly 4 dozen):
- 1 1/4 cup flour
- 1tsp salt
- 1 tbsp cinnamon
- 1/4 c ground flaxseed or flaxseed meal
- 3 tbsp Brewer’s yeast
- 1 cup butter softened (to make up for the coconut oil)
- 1.5 cup brown sugar (I prefer dark)
- 2 eggs
- 3 cups oats (not quick cooking)
- 1 cup optional of chocolate chips, cranberries, raisins, etc.
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees, whisk together flour, salt, cinnamon, flaxseed meal and brewer’s yeast.
- in a large bowl, cream butter, sugar, and eggs until smooth.
- slowly add in flour mixture. beat until all mixed together. Add optional cup of ingredients.
- drop rounded tablespoons onto a lined or sprayed cookie sheet. bake 8-12 minutes (depending on your oven) at 375. cool on sheet for a few minutes before removing.
- store in a airtight container or Ziploc baggie.
- good for about 1-2 weeks (if they make it that long)
NOTE: don’t eat a lot in one sitting, may cause tummy to become upset.
If you want to make these without the lactation benefits don’t use either Flaxseed meal and brewer’s yeast. Enjoy!
