Hot Dish

So beautiful people, I didn’t fall off the face of the earth but have been dealing with sleep regression of a 6 month old so I apologize for not posting sooner. So every week I ask my husband what he wants for dinners and lunches and this week it was Casserole or Lasagna. Since we are hosting Christmas for my family a week early I went with a very Midwest casserole called the HOT DISH! 

What is a hot dish you wonder and ask yourself, well it’s a traditional main course, hot dish is cooked and served hot in a single baking dish and commonly appears at family reunions and church suppers. Hotdish is constructed on a base of canned cream of mushroom soup and canned vegetables. The other ingredients are as varied as the Minnesota  or upper Midwest landscape.

In Illinois, we usually just call it a casserole but once you add tater tots to the top well its a different ball game. 

Recipe & Steps (bottom to top): 

  1. pick a protein – I choose ground beef (1 package) and cooked it with 1/4 of an onion, sea salt, pepper and 1 tbsp of diced garlic and placed it into my casserole dish. (no need to spray the casserole dish since the meat will sweat a little)
  2. pick your veggies – I opted for fresh and frozen over canned. I used 1 bag of frozen peas and 1 packaged of RAW sliced baby bellas. Don’t cook your mushrooms ahead of time otherwise they become overcooked and don’t taste well . 
  3. Pick your soup – I used TWO cans of cream of mushroom soup and spread that over the top
  4. tater tots !! The best part. lay them over the top, make a design if you want to, make it truly yours. 
  5. Cook hotdish for 45 minutes – 1 hour at 350 degrees.
